Foulis Castle, Scotland: A Photo Journal from Our Countryside Airbnb
Tucked away near the shores of the Cromarty Firth in Scotland stands Foulis Castle—home to Clan Munro for nearly eight centuries. During the last few days of our trip, we had the joy of staying within its walls, surrounded by history, hospitality, and the quiet beauty of the Highlands.
The cozy interior of our small apartment portion of the castle had a warm, English-countryside charm. The cream-colored kitchen with oak countertops and a garden-view window over the sink was what dreams are made of. Our bedroom had double doors that opened to a scene straight out of The Secret Garden. Every part of the courtyard had something to see, but Ethan’s favorite spot was a doorway that led to the oldest part of the castle, featuring a centuries-old memorial stone and a defensive tower fitted with keyhole gun loops.. Beyond the castle walls, open fields stretched out with fruit trees and sheep grazing in the pasture. One of my favorite moments from our trip was the hours we spent hiking their land, following a creek that wound through forests, over bridges, and past old stone walls.
One afternoon, while admiring the abundance of ripe apples on one of the trees, we met the current owner of the castle and heard stories—both past and present. His accent, along with memories of visiting his grandpa when his grandpa owned the place, made the property even sweeter. Now that the castle is in his care, he shared that it brings him and his wife such joy to share this space with others, and we felt so welcomed and loved through every thoughtful detail during our stay.
It was fun to imagine what life may have been like when the place was first built and throughout the years since. If only these walls could talk. Thankfully, there was a short book for us to read outlining how it has been passed down from generation to generation. There’s something about places steeped in history that stirs the soul—a reminder that time passes, yet God’s faithfulness remains the same.
Though most of our trip focused on ministry work, we were grateful that Ethan could take a few vacation days so we could spend some time here. Here’s a glimpse of our time in a Scottish castle, where beauty—and reasons to pause—met us at every turn.
